Claret is a small neighborhood wine bar located on the tree-lined Skillman Avenue in the heart of Sunnyside Gardens in Queens. When owners Jean Clancy and Niall Costello, longtime Sunnyside residents and lovers of wine, opened the doors in December 2008, they wanted to create a space that combined all the elegant sophistication of a candle-lit downtown wine-bar with the easy-going charm of a neighborhood local. Both Jean and Niall have travelled extensively through wine making regions around the world and wanted to bring their passion for wine to Skillman Avenue.

The atmosphere at Claret is warmly convivial: polished oak floors and exposed brick walls decorated with a bohemian collection of paintings from local artists. Kick back and relax and watch the world go by from the huge glass windows looking onto Skillman Avenue, that capture the glorious rosy glow of the late afternoon sun. In warm weather, the windows are thrown wide open - grab one of the adjacent seats to enjoy the fresh breeze and watch the neighborhood characters strolling by.  Claret also has a sidewalk cafe that operates in spring, summer and fall.

Claret currently offers boutique wines from around the globe, with many of these available by glass. The wine selection encompasses a wide variety from crowd pleasing Sauvignon Blancs to lesser known varietals such as Pecorino and Picpoul de Pinet. If you are feeling unsure where to start ask the owners, or the ever-helpful bartender for guidance and they will be happy to provide a tasting or two until you find your feet.
